I went ahead and ordered that Maverick Wireless BBQ Thermometer from Amazon that I was talking about couple of weeks ago and tested it out with my BBQ pulled pork recipe.  I don’t know how I’ve lived without this thing.  The pork came out perfect and I didn’t have to keep opening the lid on my BBQ pit to check the temperature.

I set the BBQ probe (for the pit, not the meat) just a few inches away from my pork roast, and beside it so as not to be closer to my heat source, and put the meat probe into the thickest part of the meat (but, not next to the bone). I was able to go anywhere in my house, including upstairs, and didn’t lose my signal.  You’re supposed to be able to watch your temps from as far away as 300 feet.

Since my pit is fairly new and I’m still getting a feel for it, the Maverick Wireless BBQ Thermometer was a good tool for me. I could set the receiver beside me while I was inside working on something else and keep a close eye on it. With it being a new toy (I get kind of obsessed with new toys) I didn’t miss many changes in temperature.

Its got other features that I haven’t bothered to play with yet.  Its supposed to have a count-up and count-down timer.  You’re supposed to be able to set it to beep and flash when it hits a pre-programmed temperature, which will be really useful if I fall asleep in my lawn chair. The receiver also has a light which could come in handy if you’re doing some early or late cooking.

I am concerned though that some of the reviews were less than great. The poor reviews all seem to be related to issues with the probes which seem to have a tendency to short out if you submerge the wires in water. That’s easy to address… I just wont submerge the wires in water. It shouldn’t be that difficult to clean them without messing with the wire anyway. I’ll keep an eye on it and let everybody know if I do start having problems. I’ve learned since getting it that the temp gauge on my pit is pretty accurate so I should be able to tell if there starts to be a discrepancy in the temperature readings.

In summary, I’m excited about my new Maverick Wireless BBQ Thermometer. It gives me a level of control and knowledge that I’ve never had before. That, and I like gadgets, especially when they’re useful.
